What are some great specialty pizza places in your area?

Up here is Haverhill, Ma. we have a great little place called Krueger's Flatbread. Krueger's and its sister restaurant Olivia's are located in an old beer distribution building located downtown (The old Krueger beer insignia has been lovingly restored on the side of the building).

All the pies are prepared in an open kitchen in a wood/gas fired oven and served pipping hot to your table. Krueger's also has a great selection of starters including their "River Chips," which is a pizza crust that is toasted in the pizza oven and served nacho style or with an artichoke dip that's really tasty.

The service is almost great and if you're lucky Toula (a local restauranteur legend) may great you and seat you.

This is one of my family's favorite local stops. I hope you guys check it out!

This is a big debate - first you need to decide exactly what "specialty" pizza is.

I have seen hundreds of menus that consider brocolli and chicken a specialty ingrediant. Or flatbread a delicacy base for pizza.

In my opinion, I think the meaning has lost its....meaning.

Define: Specialty Pizza.

I would define specialty as not your corner pizza joint. This is not to say that a corner joint can't make great pizza. Any pizza place that you can sit down and enjoy a pizza, beer, or glass of wine and not feel rushed. The service must be great, the atmosphere inviting, and above all a specialty place needs to do it better than a corner joint.

What do you think?

i guess me and The Kid are in the minority around here as we Love UC. it's our regular stop after a movie in Coolidge Corner.

a little further north of Haverhill is the Amesbury Flatbread Company which we feel is superior to Krueger's.

I'm on the Thumb's Down side of UC.  I was so psyched to try it and was extremely disappointed.  Also, not a big fan of the "specialty places".  Give me Regina's, Pino's, or Pinocchios and I'm a happy guy.

I agreee - add to that (for me) Pizzapalooza (although it might seem expensive for some) Not a lot of places do square.

Further, I feel speciality Pizza is not about the atmosphere, or the service - its about the food and taste. So, does this mean if I get it to go, I don't expeirence a Speciality taste or pizza? Good question, isnt it?

I think some places like to toss up Speciality to make people think they are getting something unique - that is typically never the case. You have to start with excellent base ingrediants. A place can make a killer cheese pizza (to which all other pizza's are judged in my opinion, if you cant make a cheese...) might suck at putting together uniqie ot tasty combinations otherwise - same for the reverse.

Maybe a speciality pizza has froi gras? (gross) truffles? I'll pass.. At this point, everytime I see "Specialty Pizza's" and take a look at the ingrediants, I see a list that every pizza place has. Not so special after all.
